Set in 1930s southern India against the backdrop of a growing nationalist movement, Before the Rains is the English language debut of acclaimed Indian director Santosh Sivan (The Terrorist, Asoka). An idealistic young Indian man (Rahul Bose) finds himself torn between his ambitions for the future and his loyalty to the past when people in his village learn of an affair between his British boss (Linus Roache) and a village woman (Nandita Das).

Showcase director Bill Gosden explains why Jean Claude Van Damme made the cut to get into this year’s World Cinema Showcase making it’s way round New Zealand. The Showcase is well proven as a launching pad for a handful of high-profile ‘arthouse’ films and this year that includes Laurent Cantet’s Cannes winner The Class and the Kristin Scott Thomas tour de force, I’ve Loved You So Long. Bill gives us a roundup of some of the not to be missed flicks.

Outrageous Fortune star Craig Hall chats about his latest movie roll in Show of Hands, an off-beat love story centred on a car yard in an everyday suburb, where an endurance competition with a difference is being staged.

The competition requires entrants to place a hand on a new Land Rover Discovery and keep it there. The winner of the car will be the person who keeps their hand continuously on it the longest. The world record for such a competition is over five days.

New Zealand’s only competitive short film festival is now in it’s third year with 41 films showing right across the country. One of the films is Chalk directed by Esther Cahill-Chiaroni. A story set just before Helen and Sam’s engagement party where a secret is unwittingly revealed. Show me Shorts kicks off in Auckland on November 6th before making it’s way round the country.
