This week Vincent has been looking at how the recession or the perception of a recession has had an effect on the idea of sustainability in the New Zealand economy. Vincent argues that an economic downturn actually causes people to react in a more sustainable way. If that is the case why has the New Zealand Government’s language shifted away from sustainable ideas? Vincent Heeringa is the editorial director at Idealog.

Vincent tells us about Oxfam Trailwalker, an annual fundraising event organised and promoted by Oxfam New Zealand. Funds raised from the event will support Oxfam New Zealand’s humanitarian, development and advocacy work to lift some of the world’s poorest people out of poverty. The epic battle between the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart and money channel CNBC hit a climax last week when Mad Money host Jim Cramer appeared on Jon’s show. Apart from being a brilliant and awkward piece of television it has proved to be an insightful and intelligent way of highlighting just one of the many cogs in the world financial system that caused the current crisis through mega hype in the media. Vincent is looking forward to other ways we can bring about this kind of discussion in New Zealand. Vincent Heeringa is the editorial director at Idealog.

The recent John Key sponsored Job Summit that took place in Auckland seemed to come up with few ideas. A cycle way the length of New Zealand was one and a nine day working fortnight was another. Vincent Heeringa argues that the Government is missing some important opportunities in the areas of new industry, innovation and sustainability. Vincent Heeringa is the editorial director at Idealog.

This year will be tough. Vincent says 2009 will be the year for the hard worker, the individual who puts in the hours and does not rely solely on talent to succeed. Two books have inspired Vincent over the holiday period – Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success and Geoff Colvin’s Talent is Overrated. These titles suggest to Vincent that this year is about dedicated practise. Vincent Heeringa is the editorial director at Idealog

The new government will be reducing our environmental progress while Obama is stepping the US up.

Vincent announces the Intrepid Volunteers Challenge and social networking site, so charities and volunteers like you can connect and bring change. The big idea is simply to reward our unsung heroes and make it easier for new volunteers to find a project that suits them. In terms of average hours of voluntary work per week New Zealand is a global leader but we want to help make New Zealand the world’s leading nation of volunteers per capita. This will help save hundreds of eco-systems and improve thousands of lives.
