Managing Director of Phonographic Performances NZ, Kristin Bowman, responds to outrage in the NZ Herald this week at a possible music royalty fee increase for gyms, cafes and retail.

A concern for small independent music producers is the method by which music royalty fees are distributed. Unlike radio there is no record keeping of what is actually played in businesses where royalties are collected. Therefore many independent artists are seeing their royalties go to major label artists. Kristin admits the model is not perfect and it is up for review.

Mark Roberts has been living out of a suitcase and touring the world with his band The Enright House, sharing his music with as many people as possible. That includes the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. I caught up with Mark on the way out from Austin heading to New Orleans. The band had a pretty tough show, but for Mark the best time was had watching some great musicians and cutting through the big industry nonsense. Follow Mark’s travels on Twitter.

Anna Coddington is one of New Zealand’s foremost heroines of independent pop music, as is clearly evident on her debut, self-produced album “The Lake”, due for release in June 2008. Coddington has been quietly kicking around New Zealand’s music scene for some time now. You may have heard her singing in the background of some well known tunes by artists like Bic Runga, Anika Moa, SJD, Dimmer and more, or in the foreground of a handful of casually released pop gems by her bands Handsome Geoffery and Duchess.

In this live session recorded for the Radio Wammo show on Kiwi FM Anna plays three tracks called Never Change, Hold You Here and What a Shame off her debut album The Lake.
