A new research report into the use of performance enhancing drugs by top level athletes has just been completed by a team of academics in Dublin. Professor Aiden Moran from the University Colledge of Dublin and his team questioned 375 elite athletes about their attitudes to doping. Athletes who said that their coaches frequently criticised them, punished them for mistakes, encouraged rivalries and gave unequal recognition to teammates had the most favourable attitudes to doping.

24 athletes were expelled from the 2004 games in Athens and time will tell if that experience is repeated at the Beijing Olympic Games. The World Anti-Doping Agency is testing more athletes than ever before and positive results are not declining. Taking drugs to enhance sporting success is a risky business so what drives Athletes to gamble with their chances?

Listen to Professor Aiden Moran explain what this research means.
